Jose Martin Rivera Jr. (affectionately called Pompo, Chune, Junior and Joe) was born to Jose Martin Rivera Sr. and Maria A. Rivera on August 8th, 1941 in Dixon, NM. Bertha Lionila Rivera (affectionately called Nana and Bert) was born to Maclovio Gurule Sr. and Nestora Gurule in Cebolla, NM on June 27th, 1948. These two beautiful souls met and married on December 28th, 1968. They shared almost 52 years of marriage.
They raised their five children, Michael (Denise), Susan, Carrie, Martin (Dorothy) and April (R.J.) with grace, love, and patience. They spent the majority of their lives filled with the love of their committed marriage and joy of parenthood together in Ensenada, NM. Jose proudly worked with the New Mexico State Parks (Heron and EL Vado) and retired in 2006. Bertha worked with developmentally disabled people and loved them all very much. They spent the last few years of their lives in Albuquerque, NM to be closer to family and medical facilities.
Through the many years of love, they also gained many grandchildren Michael Jr. (Janelle), Nicholas, Roque, Alan, Amanda, Moses, Tyler, Thomas, Morgan (deceased), Sarah (Adam), Hailey, Jonathon, and Alyssa, four great grand-children Alexis, Brandon, Avalyn, and Dominic.
On November 18th, 2020, our loving father Jose Martin Jr. passed away. On November 21st, 2020, our beautiful mother, Bertha, joined him as they passed into the next stage of life. Just as they were united in life, they are united in Heaven. They were very loved by their family and many friends. We pray that they rest in peace. They were survived by their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Jose Martin is survived by sister in-law Oralia Rivera and preceded in death by his parents and brothers Rafael Rivera, Frank Rivera, and Bernie Rivera. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Julian Gurule, Arturo Gurule, Rebecca Lovato, Sister Erlinda, and in-laws Sophie Gurule and Dennis Bounds, nephews Robert Gurule, Tony Martinez, Kenneth Romero and Daniel Rey. Surviving siblings and spouses for Bertha are Maclovio Jr., Carlos, Flavio (Myrna), Alvino (Jeanette), Candido, Minnie (Orlando), Priscilla (Alex), Loyola, Esther (Ned), Mary (Antonio), a special sisterly niece Diana (Larry), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will have a Memorial Celebration after public health restrictions have been lifted.
