Jose Rafael “Ralph” Riley, age 84, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026.
Ralph was born on April 22, 1941, in Riverside, New Mexico. He lived a life rich in skill, laughter, and love, and was deeply cherished by all who knew him. Throughout his life, Ralph was known for his keen sense of humor—a quick wit and playful spirit that could brighten any room and bring smiles even in the hardest moments.
A master handyman, Ralph possessed remarkable talent and ingenuity. He was highly skilled in auto mechanics, a craft he proudly learned from his father, as well as plumbing, welding, construction, and general maintenance. Always ready to fix, build, or improve whatever was needed, there was little he couldn’t repair—and even less he wouldn’t help with. His hands told the story of a life spent working hard, providing for others, and taking pride in a job well done.
Ralph’s work life began when he was drafted and proudly served in the United States Army. During his service, he survived a helicopter crash at White Sands Missile Range, a testament to his resilience and strength. Following his military service, Ralph went on to enjoy a full and meaningful life working with his hands while raising and caring for his children and grandchildren, who were truly the center of his world.
Ralph was also a gifted musician. He found joy and expression through music, playing the accordion, harmonica, and guitar with natural talent and heart. Music was one of the many ways he connected with family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, reflecting his faith, service, and commitment to community.
Above all, Ralph was a man of character—resourceful, generous, and loving. He will be remembered not only for what he could do, but for how he made people feel: welcomed, helped, and deeply loved.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, A. J. Riley and Stella Higgins, and his siblings Stella Gallegos, Richard Riley, Pat Riley, Joan Roybal, and Sonny Odom.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lydia Riley; his siblings John Riley, Glenna Vecere and her husband Joe, and Eugenio Riley and his wife Rebecca; his children Linda Koester, Wanda Archuleta, Shelly Riley and her husband Al Kraus, Michelle Riley, Jose R. Riley Jr., and Antonio Riley and his wife Jeneen Riley; his grandchildren Jordan Riley, Christian Kraus and great-grandchildren; Kailena Riley, Alexandria Riley, Ryu Riley and his stepchildren Carlos Vigil and his wife Pam, and Daniel Vigil and his wife Stacy, along with grandson Miles.
Jose Rafael “Ralph” Riley leaves behind a legacy of laughter, craftsmanship, music, faith, service, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those whose lives he touched.
