Kenneth Johnson

March 16, 1947 — November 14, 2014

Kenneth "Ken" W. Johnson, age 67, lifelong resident of Hobbs, NM passed away in his home November 14, 2014.  Ken was born in Hobbs, New Mexico on March 16, 1947.  He graduated from Hobbs High School in 1965 and Hardin-Simmons University in 1974 where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. He went on to obtain his Master’s Degree at Eastern New Mexico University in 1984.   Ken taught elementary education in the Hobbs school district until he retired.  He loved the children he taught and remained friends with many of them throughout the years.
Ken served in the United States Army for four years, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, board member of the NM Protection and Advocacy Agency which focused on children with special needs and past President of the National Education Association.  Ken passionately served as Chairman of the Lea County Democratic party for two years and worked extremely hard on the first Obama campaign.   Ken coached the Hobbs Little Dribblers and was a diehard Hobbs Eagles Basketball fan!
Ken was preceded in death by his father, Walton Thomas “Stiney” Johnson; grandparents, Claude and Nina Johnson and L.H. and Edna Braswell.  He is survived by his mother Jundell Johnson; and brother, William “TJ” Johnson; Aunt Aline Campbell of Tampa, FL and Aunt Bert Johnson of Aztec, NM; and many cousins and adopted nephews & nieces.  Ken will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those whose hearts he touched.
Services will be Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Church, 1401 Edith Blvd SE, Albuquerque NM 87102, 505-242-4617.  Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Church.  Urn Bearers will be Stephen Overman and Trevor Clay.
