Obituary

Max Otero Jr. (“Papa”) July 2, 1938 – January 13, 2026

Max Otero, lovingly known as “Papa,” passed away on January 13, 2026, at the age of 87. Papa was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was defined by love, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to his family.

Papa was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Otero; his son, Bryan Otero; and his wife, Gloria Otero, whom he married later in life. He is survived by his sister, Jeanette Jenkins, and his brother, Frank Otero, as well as his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Gloria Cordova, Gilbert Gabaldon, Melinda Gabaldon, and Robert McCarthy.

He is also survived by his loving daughters, Suzanne Mirabal and her fiancé, Jeff Vinyard, and Liz Torres and her husband, his bonus son, Lawrence Torres; and his daughter-in-law, Jessica Arnett, who remained a cherished part of the family. Papa was a loving stepfather to Roberta Campbell and Eric and Darla Nore, whom he welcomed as his own through his marriage to Gloria.

Papa lived for his grandkids and was a proud grandfather to Bryan (Leo Batekhin) and Meghan Mirabal, and Isaiah (Savannah Tapia) and Noah Torres. Through his marriage to Gloria, he was also blessed with grandchildren Damian, Carley (Jor-El), McKenna, Avery, and Olivia, and four great-grandchildren: Lucy, Ezra, Jace, and Sol.

Papa loved his family more than anything and was their fiercest supporter. He showed up—without hesitation—for anything and everything involving his grandchildren, from sporting events and school activities to all of life’s important moments. His presence was steady, encouraging, and always full of pride.

In addition to his devotion to family, Papa proudly served as a Marine Reservist and dedicated much of his professional life to supporting drug awareness efforts throughout the state. His tireless work and advocacy earned him widespread recognition, reflecting his deep commitment to protecting and uplifting others.

Known as one of the most giving and kind people, Papa always did right by others and taught his children and grandchildren through the example he lived every day. He carried himself with integrity, compassion, and quiet strength, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on through the love he shared and the countless lives he touched.
