Patricia "Patsy" Tarrand

Patricia “Patsy” Tarrand, age 83, passed away in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 28, 2025. A beloved mother, sister and friend, Patsy was a loyal and loving force in the lives of those around her, and she’ll be dearly missed.

Patsy was a lifelong resident of New Mexico. Born in 1942 to Mary (Baca) Vargas and David H. Vargas, she was the eldest daughter and second of nine children.

She dedicated her career to the University of New Mexico Hospital system, where she rose to a leadership role in the administrative operations department, developing close relationships with her colleagues along the way. A dancer, softball pitcher and fierce advocate for those she loved, Patsy was an undeniable presence. Throughout her life, Patsy’s unwavering commitment to her faith served as a beacon through adversity and forged the steadfast resilience that became her trademark.

Perhaps most of all, Patsy will be remembered for the adoration she shared for her sons, Raymond, Charles and Alex, whom she often deemed “the loves of her life.” Her passing marks her long-awaited reunion with her second son, Charles David, who predeceased Patsy as a young child. In addition to her parents, Patsy also joins the loving memory of brothers David A. Vargas, Richard Vargas, Tony Vargas, and Michael Lueras.

Patsy is survived by sons Raymond Tafoya and Alex Tarrand; siblings Debbie Vargas, Rita Vargas, Martin Vargas and his wife Cara, Lawrence Vargas and his wife Terry; along with grandson Dominic Tafoya and long-time companion Charles Paiz.

As a self-assured and independent woman, Patsy was, in many ways, ahead of her time. In true Vargas fashion, she always ‘picked herself up by her bootstraps.’ Along with her infectious laugh, Patsy will be remembered for her unyielding spirit and fierce devotion to her family.

Patsy’s Celebration of Life will be at The Chapel at Alameda Mortuary at 2pm on August 5, 2025 (9420 4th St NW, Albuquerque NM 87114). A reception will follow.
